Zeiss has commemorated two million Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) treatments worldwide. Now used by more than 2,000 surgeons across more than 70 countries, a clinical trial is now underway to assess the use of SMILE in hyperopic patients.
SMILE, a minimally-invasive corneal refractive procedure, is performed using the VisuMax femtosecond laser by creating a thin disc-shaped lenticule within the cornea, which is then removed through a small incision. This results in the desired vision correction.

SMILE requires only one laser to perform the entire procedure, leaving the outer corneal layer largely intact, potentially contributing to the cornea’s biomechanical and refractive stability after surgery.
