An optometrist, with 27 years’ experience and therapeutic qualifications, is volunteering his time to help optometrists whose practices have been affected by recent disastrous floods in New South Wales and Queensland.
The optometrist, who preferred not to be named in this article, said he is available to work in flood affected practices for up to two months, providing time for practitioners to recover.

“When you’re dealing with an emergency, as many optometrists are right now, adrenalin gets you through – once things return to normal exhaustion kicks in. Unfortunately, there’s often no-one to keep the practice running while you take a break, and closing the doors is not a viable option, so you struggle on. In the long-term that’s not good for your physical or mental health. I hope that by offering my time and skills I can provide the support needed to help prevent these issues.”
The optometrist also urged suppliers and other practitioners to make spare equipment and frames available to flood victims. “We just need to do as much as we can to help get these practitioners back on their feet,” he told mivision.
