mivision Issue 228 November 2026

Melanie Kell is usually the one writing this editorial. This month, she’s left it to me while she reports from SILMO in Paris – a dream assignment, as she would be the first to tell you.

She says she’s had so much fun (well, I mean, it is Paris) but her travel plans have also developed a few unexpected delays, making the journey home rather longer than intended.

While she’s been exploring what the international eyewear industry has to offer, the team has spent time with the articles in this issue. It’s an interesting mix of innovation and the people who give it purpose.

Emeritus Professor Graham Barrett AM has retired from clinical practice, but his conversation with Alan Saks makes clear that he has plenty of ideas and projects ahead of him. Optometrist Julie Purdie has found a way to bring her knowledge of vision science into her art, creating paintings and photographs that ask us to think about how – as well as what – we see. And Dr Jay Yohendran takes stock of cataract surgery, from intraocular lens choices to technologies that may shape its future.

The human side of care is just as prominent. We look at how much it matters for cataract patients to understand their lens options, why dry eye in people with diabetes deserves attention even when symptoms are mild, and how to approach a conversation about driving when someone’s vision changes. There are also stories of eye care professionals who have been lauded for going well beyond what was expected to help their patients.

This issue is a great reminder of how many different ways there are to make an impact in eye care. I hope you enjoy reading it.
