Good Design Award for Medmont Meridia Vantage

Medmont International has received the prestigious ‘Best in Class’ Good Design Award in the Medical Device Category for the Medmont Meridia Vantage corneo-scleral topographer.

Established in 1958 and endorsed by the World Design Organization (WDO), the Good Design Awards have been Australia’s highest international design accolade for over six decades.

The ‘Best in Class’ accolade recognises excellence in design, technical innovation, quality, and environmental and social impact.

Developed in partnership with Melbourne industrial design agency Outerspace Design and supported by the Victorian Government’s Medtech Manufacturing Capability Program (MMCP), Medmont Meridia Vantage resolves a long-standing industry challenge by delivering wide-coverage scleral topography without compromising corneal precision.

Ryan Annear, R&D Manager at Medmont acknowledged Outerspace Design’s contribution to the Meridia Vantage. “Outer Space really hit the ground running… conducting field research and observational studies to uncover product-use opportunities. Concept design, UX, and ergonomics on the operator console and headrest helped us home in on a solution,” he said.

Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor Randy Kojima, from Pacific University College of Optometry in Canada, highlighted the diverse capability of the device. “Our school has many diagnostic instruments, but nothing can do as much as the Medmont Meridia Vantage. Its illumination, optics, and accuracy make it the preferred tool for much of our work. The Vantage is one of the most versatile and powerful tools that eye care clinicians have access to,” he said.

Redefining the Standard For Custom CL Fitting

Specialty contact lenses – such as scleral lenses – are underutilised due to skill barriers, trial-and-error fitting processes, and the need for expensive, separate diagnostic devices.

Medmont Meridia Vantage eliminates these barriers. By combining gold-standard corneal topography, wide-coverage scleral topography, high-definition imaging, and dry eye analysis tools in one intelligent device, it provides the full data required for fast, accurate lens design.

And, by transforming complex scleral lens fitting from an intimidating niche expertise into an accessible clinical standard, the device enables independent general practices to expand their offerings without prohibitive capital investment. This brings advanced care closer to local and regional communities, alleviating the strain on specialist clinics and improving patient quality of life worldwide.

For Dr Hanish Patel from Eye Associates of New York, this makes the Medmont Meridia Vantage “essential part of my clinical workflow”.

“It has reduced the number of trial lenses I need for sclerals, allows me to clearly monitor ortho-k treatment patterns, and provides objective imaging for dry eye. It’s reliable, intuitive to use, and has genuinely elevated the level of care I’m able to provide,” he said.

Innovations recognised

The award jury recognised the following innovations:

  • Dual-optics measurement system. Medmont Meridia Vantage integrates separate optical measurement systems to maintain Medmont’s gold-standard topography accuracy across the cornea and sclera without compromise.
  • Ergonomic, solo-operator design. Features a tapered, slimline chassis, adjustable headrest and single-handed joystick, allowing clinicians to comfortably hold open eyelids while imaging without an assistant.
  • Patient-centric form. Sculpted modules, a minimalist form, and a matte-black optical cone are designed to reduce patient anxiety, improve operator sightlines and maximise comfort.
  • Sustainable workflow: Precise software-based lens simulation reduces non-recyclable trial lenses, cutting medical waste and patient travel emissions from repeat visits.
